CHAPTER 10

Sleep hadn’t come easily. I had waited for Fitz and Mabel to return from the basement and demanded that we have one giant slumber party in my room. With a little furniture rearranging we were able to barricade the door with a vanity unit and Fitz used some of his magic to make sure that the windows couldn’t be opened from the outside.

I’d lay staring at the ceiling for what felt like hours. Every time my eyelids would grow heavy enough that I thought I was about to drift off there would be a noise somewhere beyond the walls of the hotel and my body would jolt. I could swear I’d heard howling at one point, a reminder of the dangers I was surrounded by. My husband-to-be wanted to protect me, but if he came close enough to do that then he could get himself killed. The same rang true for my guardian.

My final memory before I fell asleep was of a shadow across the glass, as if something was clinging to the exterior wall and peering in. A streetlight bounced off the amulet on the chest of the dark figure; Ryder. Maybe I had conjured an image of him and he was never really there. Maybe he’d raced across the island, navigated his way through dense, dangerous forest and passed the pack of wolves on patrol and had risked his life to check up on me.

When I finally opened my eyes they felt like they were burning. A sound had woken us, and Mabel was also squinting into the daylight beside me. Fitz stretched and yawned, bounced over to the windowsill and stared down at the activity below.

“Are they throwing up gallows?” I asked. I was joking, I think.

“No, it’s a milk delivery truck. The back of it is full of crates with glass bottles all rattling together,” he explained. “Businesses are starting to open up, maybe we can get the jeep sorted before breakfast.”

“That’s actually a good idea,” I replied.

“No need to sound so surprised.”

“Sorry. You’re going to have to stay in the room again, don’t forget. Mabel and I will find us a way out of here as quick as we can and then we can hit the road,” I said. “We need to get the jeep in a drivable state and wrap things up with Rowena so that she can give us permission to leave.”

“What about the killer?” Mabel asked.

“They’ve gone this long without calling in outside help, they have police here I’m sure they’ll figure it out,” I shrugged.

“Rowena said we should speak to her again after we’ve solved the murder, I don’t get the impression that she mis-spoke.”

Yeah, this was very much a hostage situation. There was nothing to stop us sorting out the clamp on the jeep, though. I considered calling Ryder again and asking if he were able to bust into this place and give us both piggy-back rides back home. Or maybe the wolf pack could swoop in and let us ride them through the trees.
